MP ‘attacks’ Akufo-Addo for having fun in a club with women

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has taken President Akufo-Addo to the cleaners over a video that has surfaced online.
In the video, President Akufo-Addo is seen dancing in the company of some women at an unknown location.
Taking graceful steps, he dances to MzVee’s ‘Come and see my mother’, as others around him also exhibit their dancing skills.
The content of the video did not go down well with Dr. Apaak who wondered by the president could be having fun, in the face of the challenges Ghana is currently facing.

“Our president finds time to party in a club in these difficult times! Is this what he is borrowing for? See how NADAA dey bogie as Ghanaians dey suffer!”, the post on his wall read.
His comments follow remarks by President Akufo-Addo that his government will continue to borrow to ensure that projects are executed.
Speaking at an entrepreneurship forum organised by the Tony Elumelo Foundation in Nigeria, on Thursday, October 25, 2018, President Akufo-Addo stated that every country borrows, and for that reason, the decision isn’t an unusual one.
President Akufo-Addo’s statement was in response to a question from one of the participants who asked why he goes for loans from China despite his ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mantra.

Boy drugs and defiles 14-year-old girl
The victim was drugged with a bottle water

An 18-year-old boy has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit court for defiling a 14-year-old girl at Kaneshie, Accra.
Samuel Otoo, who pleaded guilty in court, was convicted on his own plea.
Otoo, in his plea, told the court he had regretted his actions and prayed the court to plead with the girl’s mother on his behalf.
The court, presided over by Mrs Rita Doku, in sentencing took into consideration Otoo’s plea, being truthful and not wasting the court’s time.
The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Agnes Boafo, told the court that the girl is a junior high school student in her final year and lived with her mother at Kaneshie

On October 1, 2018, the girl and her mother went about their daily hawking routine selling tiger nuts.
At about 8 p.m., the girl sat on a bench in front of a shop to relax for sometime while her mother went further to sell.
Suddenly, Otoo approached the girl and gave her a bottle of water and told her that her mother sent him to bring her the water.
After the girl drunk the water, she felt dizzy and Otoo, with the help of a friend who is at large, carried her to a fitting shop and had sex with her in a car parked at the shop.
The girl’s mother came back to the spot where her daughter was resting but could not find her.

With the help of other people around, she searched for her daughter and finally found her together with Otoo sleeping in the car.
Quickly, the mother woke them (her daughter and Otoo) up and she detected some changes in how the girl was walking and immediately the girl fell unconscious.
The mother rushed her daughter to the Ridge hospital for treatment, while Otoo was sent to the police station.
Otoo was subsequently arrested by the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

UG Distance Students Threaten Demo Over Poor Academic Conditions

UG Distance Students Threaten Demo Over Poor Academic Conditions

According to them, the poor services rendered to them is unbearable.
Although their mode of study; distance education is to allow them combine e-learning and face to face interaction , the reality according to them is completely different.
They have thus threatened to embark on a demonstration to push the university authorities to do what is right.
In an interview, the students expressed their frustrations over lack of lecture halls, delay in the provision of learning materials, a non-functional online portal for registration and delay in the release of grades.
Uncomfortable lecture theatres
The students are unhappy about the discomfort due to the congestion in these lecture halls.
An open source learning management system (LMS), Sakai, that was created for the students for assignments is fraught with operational challenges.
“When we come for lectures, we are mostly overcrowded in the class. We do not even have a place to sit. Even lecturers don’t come on time. When we are going to take our Sakai online tests at the labs, there is no space. There are few computers that can’t serve a large number of students. We need more computers to ease the pressure on us.
The high cost of school fees
The students also claim the cost of tuition coupled with poor services rendered is taking a toll on their finances.
They accused lecturers of leaving them in the hands of ‘inexperienced’ teaching assistants.
According to one of the students, “We are not getting value for the fees we pay. The school fees is expensive, but conditions for teaching and learning are extremely poor. At times, we travel long distances for lectures and meet the class cancelled”.
“There are instances where we do not even see our lecturers throughout the whole the semester. The teaching assistants who teach us are also not up to the task, and it affects us during the end of semester examinations,” he added.
Challenges with online registration
The students who are expected to register for the academic semester said there are always issues with the online portal when the time for registration is due.
They also bemoaned instances where grades for courses they had taken for previous semesters are delayed unnecessarily or even not released.
“There are times the online portal for registration is not opened for weeks. And if you do not register, management tends to blame you for negligence. There are always delays, and they tell us different stories. Some of our grades are still not in. We have complained about it several times but to no avail”, a frustrated student disclosed.
UG distance education programme
The University of Ghana introduced the distance education module as a way of widening access to its academic programmes through technology-mediated learning.
The programme has over the years been revised to harness the potential of cutting-edge educational technology that will reduce the space between the lecturer and the distance learner.
In spite of these innovations, students enrolled in the programme are unhappy about how the module is run.
