MP ‘attacks’ Akufo-Addo for having fun in a club with women

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has taken President Akufo-Addo to the cleaners over a video that has surfaced online.
In the video, President Akufo-Addo is seen dancing in the company of some women at an unknown location.
Taking graceful steps, he dances to MzVee’s ‘Come and see my mother’, as others around him also exhibit their dancing skills.
The content of the video did not go down well with Dr. Apaak who wondered by the president could be having fun, in the face of the challenges Ghana is currently facing.

“Our president finds time to party in a club in these difficult times! Is this what he is borrowing for? See how NADAA dey bogie as Ghanaians dey suffer!”, the post on his wall read.
His comments follow remarks by President Akufo-Addo that his government will continue to borrow to ensure that projects are executed.
Speaking at an entrepreneurship forum organised by the Tony Elumelo Foundation in Nigeria, on Thursday, October 25, 2018, President Akufo-Addo stated that every country borrows, and for that reason, the decision isn’t an unusual one.
President Akufo-Addo’s statement was in response to a question from one of the participants who asked why he goes for loans from China despite his ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mantra.

Boy drugs and defiles 14-year-old girl

October 28, 2018 0
Boy drugs and defiles 14-year-old girl
The victim was drugged with a bottle water

An 18-year-old boy has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit court for defiling a 14-year-old girl at Kaneshie, Accra.
Samuel Otoo, who pleaded guilty in court, was convicted on his own plea.
Otoo, in his plea, told the court he had regretted his actions and prayed the court to plead with the girl’s mother on his behalf.
The court, presided over by Mrs Rita Doku, in sentencing took into consideration Otoo’s plea, being truthful and not wasting the court’s time.
The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Agnes Boafo, told the court that the girl is a junior high school student in her final year and lived with her mother at Kaneshie

On October 1, 2018, the girl and her mother went about their daily hawking routine selling tiger nuts.
At about 8 p.m., the girl sat on a bench in front of a shop to relax for sometime while her mother went further to sell.
Suddenly, Otoo approached the girl and gave her a bottle of water and told her that her mother sent him to bring her the water.
After the girl drunk the water, she felt dizzy and Otoo, with the help of a friend who is at large, carried her to a fitting shop and had sex with her in a car parked at the shop.
The girl’s mother came back to the spot where her daughter was resting but could not find her.

With the help of other people around, she searched for her daughter and finally found her together with Otoo sleeping in the car.
Quickly, the mother woke them (her daughter and Otoo) up and she detected some changes in how the girl was walking and immediately the girl fell unconscious.
The mother rushed her daughter to the Ridge hospital for treatment, while Otoo was sent to the police station.
Otoo was subsequently arrested by the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

UG Distance Students Threaten Demo Over Poor Academic Conditions

October 27, 2018 0
UG Distance Students Threaten Demo Over Poor Academic Conditions

According to them, the poor services rendered to them is unbearable.
Although their mode of study; distance education is to allow them combine e-learning and face to face interaction , the reality according to them is completely different.
They have thus threatened to embark on a demonstration to push the university authorities to do what is right.
In an interview, the students expressed their frustrations over lack of lecture halls, delay in the provision of learning materials, a non-functional online portal for registration and delay in the release of grades.
Uncomfortable lecture theatres
The students are unhappy about the discomfort due to the congestion in these lecture halls.
An open source learning management system (LMS), Sakai, that was created for the students for assignments is fraught with operational challenges.
“When we come for lectures, we are mostly overcrowded in the class. We do not even have a place to sit. Even lecturers don’t come on time. When we are going to take our Sakai online tests at the labs, there is no space. There are few computers that can’t serve a large number of students. We need more computers to ease the pressure on us.
The high cost of school fees
The students also claim the cost of tuition coupled with poor services rendered is taking a toll on their finances.
They accused lecturers of leaving them in the hands of ‘inexperienced’ teaching assistants.
According to one of the students, “We are not getting value for the fees we pay. The school fees is expensive, but conditions for teaching and learning are extremely poor. At times, we travel long distances for lectures and meet the class cancelled”.
“There are instances where we do not even see our lecturers throughout the whole the semester. The teaching assistants who teach us are also not up to the task, and it affects us during the end of semester examinations,” he added.
Challenges with online registration
The students who are expected to register for the academic semester said there are always issues with the online portal when the time for registration is due.
They also bemoaned instances where grades for courses they had taken for previous semesters are delayed unnecessarily or even not released.
“There are times the online portal for registration is not opened for weeks. And if you do not register, management tends to blame you for negligence. There are always delays, and they tell us different stories. Some of our grades are still not in. We have complained about it several times but to no avail”, a frustrated student disclosed.
UG distance education programme
The University of Ghana introduced the distance education module as a way of widening access to its academic programmes through technology-mediated learning.
The programme has over the years been revised to harness the potential of cutting-edge educational technology that will reduce the space between the lecturer and the distance learner.
In spite of these innovations, students enrolled in the programme are unhappy about how the module is run.

Bolga school cries for furniture as pupils study on floor

Bolga school cries for furniture as pupils study on floor
Pupils of Kalbeo Tindonsobligo primary sit on bare floor for studies

Pupils of Kalbeo-Tindongsobligo primary school in the Bolgatanga municipality in the Upper East Region sit on the bare floor for studies.
The six-unit classroom block in the school does not have furniture for effective teaching and learning.
Pupils of the school which has an enrolment of over 400 pupils from kindergarten to primary four sit on the bare floor for their lessons.
Even though primary five and six have furniture, that is woefully inadequate compelling some pupils to sit on the floor for studies.
The headteacher of the school, Felicia Ayamga declined speaking to Citi News about the impact of the situation on academic work in line with GES policy.

Pupils were also prevented from speaking to Citi News.
But this reporter observed the pupils struggling to put their books on their laps to copy notes from the chalkboard.
The pupils have to wash their uniforms on a daily basis as their uniforms get dirty from sitting on a bare floor.
The headteacher of the school Felicia Ayamga, however, appealed to philanthropist, NGOs and government for pieces of furniture for the pupils.
She added that, though the Member of Parliament for Bolga central Isaac Adongo is working at getting the school some 80 pieces of dual desk, it will not be enough for the hundreds of pupils.

Teacher Trainee group warns members against registering for NSS

Teacher Trainee group warns members against registering for NSS

The Teacher Trainee Advocacy (TTA) has cautioned newly trained teachers against undertaking the new policy requiring them to do a one-year national service.
Patrick Karikari, national convener of the TTA explained that “students were not informed about the intentions to make students take part in the National Service Scheme while in school for three years.”
Speaking Friday to Mamavi on News Desk on Joy News TV, Mr Karikari explained that “government through the NSS released a letter October 25, addressing that the trainees will go through the national service scheme before they will be posted.”
He stated that the newly trained teachers were made aware that after writing the Teacher Licensure Examinations, they will be posted when the results are out.
“The National Teaching Council said the trainees had to write the licensure examination to become professional teachers and after those postings will begin,” he said.

According to him, the future of the 16,000 trainees awaiting their postings are in a limbo because the results of the examinations are not out.
The TTA national convener said members feel disrespected by the manner government springs on them a number of policies like the Teacher Licensure Examination and reduction of their semesters from four to two, without consulting them.
He asked the NSS and government to reconsider the decision for the teachers to do the National Service before they are posted.
However, Director of Public Affairs at NSS, David Prah, who also spoke on News Desk said about 14,000 pin codes have been released for them to generate for the registration.
Mr. Prah said the decision to allow these teachers to go through the national service was taken because the transition from teacher training schools to colleges of education has automatically made the training schools tertiary institutions.

He explained that “it is now mandatory by law for these newly trained teachers to go through the national service.”
The Director of Public Affairs at NSS said an arrangement was made with Ghana Education Service (GES) so that the probation year will be taken as the service.

I sold my laptop to start shoe-making; the story of Chaste Shoes Daniel Odonkor, CEO Chaste Shoes

October 26, 2018 0
I sold my laptop to start shoe-making; the story of Chaste Shoes Daniel Odonkor, CEO Chaste Shoes

Which of your assets or properties are you willing to sacrifice to chase a dream? Is it your car, house or jewellery? Well, one young man decided to sell his only laptop to start a business. Read on as he shares with the B&FT Inspiring Start-ups how events unfolded.
Daniel Odonkor grew up in Tema, Greater Accra Region of Ghana, but had his secondary education at the Suhum Senior High and Technical School, completing in 2008.
He holds a degree in Construction Technology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. While in the second year at university, Daniel realised he was not satisfied with the course he was studying: there was a missing link somewhere. He wanted to do something different.
Starting a business from the internet
Close to his hostel were some guys who made slippers which he used to patronise very well. One day, he approached the guys and asked if they could make shoes. But the response from them showed they were not really interested in doing so. But one of them was quite level-headed. He agreed to do it for him. Daniel, having no knowledge of shoe-making, took to the Internet for information.
He watched videos on YouTube and other channels to see how shoes are made. He showed the videos to the shoe-maker and they both decided to try their hands on it. The first samples he showed to some classmates and friends from church were appreciated and they were eager to buy them. So, this encouraged him to enter the business full-time. But where would he get money to start?
Laptop to the rescue

A laptop is one of the most-prized assets of every student, and it was the only asset Daniel had at the time. Having no other option to raise money for the business, he sold his only laptop and used the GH¢500 (about US$100) proceeds to invest in his new business idea—shoe-making. His first production started with 10 pairs of shoes, which all sold out in no time. This encouraged him that the business would succeed.
Remember, Daniel was still a construction student so his venture into shoe-making surprised many on campus. In his final year in school, his nice shoe designs won him Student Entrepreneur of the Year – an award he has fond memories o,f as it came to him as a surprise.
After graduating, he did his national service with a microfinance institution in Tema. Though he had a busy schedule, he didn’t let that kill the shoes dream. Each and every weekend, he would go to Kumasi, where his factory was based, make the shoes with his friend and take the products to Accra and sell. This was his schedule throughout his national service period.
All that while he was also saving his allowance from the national service to purchase a few tools and machines he needed for his business. So, right after the service he was bent on becoming self-employed.

From humble beginnings

His decision didn’t go down well with his family, as they felt he should look for a ‘better’ job in the corporate world and not waste his time on making shoes. What even worsened the situation for him was the fact that he was working from home, with his room filled with shoes. In fact, his bedroom was turned into a workshop. It was as if, from his family’s perspective, he was going crazy.
But defiant and determined, Daniel would not allow such perceptions to discourage him. He launched the business and registered it with the name Chaste Shoes – a name he says stems from the quality and distinct nature of his products. Then, with the help of a friend, he got some money to rent a shop in Accra, which is the current location of his business.

From a business that he started with making only ten pairs of shoes, he is now able to produce 80 or more in a month depending on the demand. He is not only producing shoes but has also added other leather accessories like wallets, belts, among others.
He has currently provided employment for seven people and hopes to add more as the business expands.

Marketing

Social media, of course, has been his main advertising medium. He has accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where clients can get to see some of their products and make orders online.

Vision

In the next five years, Chaste Shoes wants to make a mark in Ghana and beyond. Daniel wants to push his brand to other African countries and become prominent on the continent.
Challenges

As usual, financial challenges are prominent. They have become the main bane of many businesses in Ghana, especially the startups.
“We don’t have financial institutions that are willing to back you as a startup. Most of them want you to grow big before they extend support to you.”
Again, another challenge is having to always depend on imports for raw materials and machines needed for work, especially for leather. With the currency always fluctuating, the price of leather is not stable on the market – and that really affects the business.
Then, worst of all the challenges is the mindset issue. As local entrepreneurs face on a regular basis, many locals look down on products made in Ghana. The foreign appetite for goods is so strong that buyers feel products made locally are of inferior quality, and as such must be cheap.
“Ghanaians have this mindset that because the products are made here, they are not quality. So, in most cases they want to buy it cheap. But that is why we are changing that status quo with our quality brand.”
The role of education
For Daniel, education has been a big influence on him. It has redefined his perception of customer service. He reads books on management, and this has given knowledge on how to drive his business to grow.

Electricity consumers to choose their own suppliers by 2023 - Energy Commission

Electricity consumers to choose their own suppliers by 2023 - Energy Commission

Every household can now choose its supplier when the move is being set in place
Energy consumers should by 2023 choose their own power suppliers. This is according to the Energy Commission.
The move is part of reforms being undertaken to make the power supply subsector more competitive.
Per the new arrangement, smaller private entities will be given the license to distribute power regardless of the meter they use.
The current system limits consumers to purchase power from only one source including the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG.
Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Ofosu Ahenkorah explained that incentives are being put in place to make the power distribution subsector more efficient.

“If you have multiple buyers and sellers then you create competition. We have lowered the bulk customer classification for much smaller entities to go into the bulk power market. So in five years’ time, every household can choose its supplier”.
Access to electricity has increased across the country over the years.
Currently, 81 percent households have electricity with 84 percent communities connected.
This means that the country can have a 100 percent accessibility to power, but not until existing generation capacity is expanded and more private sector investments are attracted to fund the expansion.
The sector has been undergoing some reforms for the past 20 years now to address these challenges.

When the reforms are done, the power sector would have more generators and distributors who will compete to supply both large, medium and small final consumers.
However, Industrial and Energy Consultant, Andrew Quayson says the high cost of power must be first addressed.
“To me, that is not the first priority. The first priority is to make sure that the system is efficient. How do we reduce the cost of production?”
He added that “we have hydro which is relatively cheaper. We have thermal. The generation units should be combined so they can use gas for production. We have realized that in the northern region collection is 60 percent. So we need to improve the collection rate. The other one is commercial and technical loses”.
Power distribution has been confronted with low revenue collection and illegal wiring.

Tragedy as student stabs classmate to death
File photo - The student used a compass to kill his mate

A 14-year-old student of West Ridge Junior High School in Sekondi/Takoradi has been stabbed to death by his classmate.
The tragic incident happened Thursday, October 25 during what school authorities and police say started as a usual boyhood prank between two classmates.
The victim, a final Junior High School student, was said to be copying his notes while his mate now turned suspect, teased him.
According to the police, the victim who felt irritated over the persistent teasing by his colleague, then threw his hand to ward him off.
In the process, the pen he was copying his notes with, which was in his hand, pricked his teasing friend, who angrily retaliated by stabbing him in the chest with an implement suspected to be a compass.

The police said the victim who was bleeding profusely, was rushed to the hospital but died on Friday, October 26, which happens to be his 14th birthday.
When contacted, the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) Metropolitan Public Relations Officer, Kate A. Biney confirmed that the incident happened on Thursday during school break while the victim was copying his notes.
She said when the deceased felt irritated and warned his classmate to stop so he could finish copying the notes, he did not listen but continued and when the mate threw his hand at him to stop him and got scratched, he rather took offence.
Mrs Biney said after being stabbed, the victim in pain rushed to the office of the head teacher to report but became unconscious and fell down.
At the hospital

She said he was initially sent to the Essikado Government Hospital but later referred to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital where he died Friday morning.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ms Olivia Ewuraabena Adiku said the police are investigating the case.
She said the incident happened in the early hours of the day but the school authorities reported it at about 6pm on Thursday.
She said since the case involved a youngster, it has been transferred to the domestic violence and victims support unit of the Ghana Police Service.

Customer sues UMB Bank over GHC160k ‘illegal’ withdrawal

Customer sues UMB Bank over GHC160k ‘illegal’ withdrawal
The money was taken in two tranches of GHC 75,000 and 85,000

An aggrieved Customer of Universal Merchant Bank has dragged the firm to court over unauthorized withdrawal from his account.
The Tarkwa based customer had GHC160,000 withdrawn from the Ashaiman branch of UMB bank in April 2018.
The money was taken in two tranches of GHC 75,000 and 85,000.
The customer who is a former worker of Goldfields says various attempts to get the Bank to address the issue has proven futile hence the court action.

“When the matter was brought to the attention of the UMB Bank Tarkwa branch manager, Steven Akuleme he said if you are drunk and your money is withdrawn from the bank you can’t blame the bank,” Noel Abban who is relative of the aggrieved customer told Starr Business.
He added that: “The bank did not seek the consent of the customer before allowing the withdrawals. We have acquired the call history to prove that.”
Meanwhile, the Tarkwa branch of UMB Bank has declined from commenting on the matter.
The bank is however preparing to battle the case in court.

EC Chair could face jail time as ROPAL deadline looms in 68 days

October 25, 2018 0
EC Chair could face jail time as ROPAL deadline looms in 68 days

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa has about three months to avoid possible jail time over the implementation of a 2017 court order.
That order was to implement a law that allows Ghanaians in the diaspora to vote without paying the price of an international transport fare.
When the EC Chair, appointed in July 2018, got ready to start this work, she formed a committee to examine the implementation of possibly the most difficult electoral task to date.
But it turns out, this committee is about to do a ‘difficult work’ already done twice.
Legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Ayenini, pointed this out on Joy News’ late evening analysis show PM Express.

There is a 2011 report that details a ‘comprehensive roadmap’ for ROPAL implementation and another report done by a consultant to the EC that ‘virtually’ recommended a similar roadmap, the lawyer explained to host Evans Mensah.
Justifying the latest EC committee on ROPAL, the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, said the 2011 committee’s work was to register Ghanaians working at embassies or on scholarships who are allowed to vote.
But this 2018 committee will mull over “whether or not it will be possible to implement” ROPAL in the next general elections in 2020.
Samson Lardy Anyenini said this explanation is a sign the EC does not read its own reports and laws.
He explained the 2011 work had nothing to do with registering anybody. That committee which included then EC commissioner Safo Kantanka, NDC heavyweight Hudu Yahya and NPP strategist Dan Botwe, drew a comprehensive roadmap for implementation, the lawyer explained.

Jean Mensa’s explanation, “I am sorry to say was complete untruth,” Samson Lardy, who obtained a Supreme Court judgment ordering the implementation, said. He explained, ROPAL was passed by Parliament in February 2006 after very extensive consultations in Ghana and abroad.
It took the EC five years to do another extensive consultation on implementation in 2011.
Another consultant has also drawn another roadmap, albeit similar and it has taken another eight more years to draw up another roadmap.
Surely, the court must be exasperated by the feet-dragging, the lawyer suggested and warned the EC chair of looming contempt of court.
The IGP has been found guilty of contempt over his failure to implement a court order.

Ghana’s number one police officer is awaiting his sentence. “They [the EC commissioners] should wait”, the legal practitioner warned. “I have no doubt that if they do not comply with the orders of the court, they are likely to face prison terms or a fine”, he said.
The EC has 68 more days to comply with the 2017 court order. But if the commission believes it can not, it must notify the court 30 days to the expiration of the January 2019 deadline.
If the court is convinced, a new deadline could be handed down as the 2006 law gets set to mark its 19th anniversary of non-implementation.

Obama, Clinton among targets of suspected bombs ahead of U.S. election

October 25, 2018 0
Obama, Clinton among targets of suspected bombs ahead of U.S. election

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were among the targets of suspected package bombs delivered to several high-profile Democrats and CNN, which the FBI said it was investigating as an act of terrorism.
At least eight suspicious parcels were intercepted before reaching any intended recipients, including Obama’s attorney general, Eric Holder, former CIA Director John Brennan and prominent Democratic Party donor George Soros.
Two packages were sent to California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the FBI said. Investigators were trying to track down another suspicious parcel they believe was addressed to Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden, a federal official told Reuters late on Wednesday.
None of the eight packages detonated, and nobody was hurt. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
But news of the bomb threats heightened tension in a nation deeply polarized ahead of elections on Nov. 6 that will decide whether Democrats take control of one or both houses of Congress from Republicans and deny President Donald Trump the majority his party now holds in both.
Some leading Democrats were quick to accuse Trump himself of stoking the potential for political violence by frequently engaging in hyper-partisan, vitriolic rhetoric.

Trump told a political rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday his government would conduct “an aggressive investigation.”
“Any acts or threats of political violence are an attack on our democracy itself,” Trump said. “We want all sides to come together in peace and harmony.”
But he said the media has a responsibility “to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories.”

MANILA ENVELOPES

The first package, which turned up on Monday, was addressed to Soros, the billionaire financier and frequent target of right-wing conspiracy theories.
The parcel intended for Holder ended up rerouted to the return address printed on all the packages - the Florida office of U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who formerly chaired the Democratic National Committee, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The FBI said late on Wednesday it had confirmed that two additional packages, similar in appearance to the others, were addressed to U.S. Representative Waters, a veteran Democratic congresswoman from Los Angeles and also an outspoken Trump critic.
An earlier FBI statement said the other packages consisted of a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap interior containing “potentially destructive devices.” Each bore a computer-printed address label and six “Forever” postage stamps.
Other officials said the devices contained in the envelopes were all similar to one found in the mailbox of the Soros home and later detonated by police. At least one bomb was packed with shards of glass, one federal source said.
The U.S. Secret Service intercepted packages addressed to Obama at his Washington home and to Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for president, at her home in New York state.
The CNN bureau in New York received a package addressed to Brennan, who has appeared as an on-air CNN analyst, leading police to evacuate the Time Warner building in a busy Manhattan neighborhood near Central Park. It contained an envelope of white powder that experts were analyzing, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said.
The package to Clinton was found late on Tuesday while the one addressed to Obama was recovered early on Wednesday, both during routine off-site mail screenings, the Secret Service said. Obama and Clinton were not at risk, they said.
“So far the devices have been what appeared to be pipe bombs,” John Miller, the New York City police deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, told a news conference.
An FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies “will continue to work to identity and arrest whosoever is responsible for sending these packages,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.

‘WORDS MATTER

All of the targets are frequently maligned by right-wing critics. Trump has repeatedly criticized CNN as “fake news” and disparaged the mainstream news media as an “enemy of the people.”
“There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media,” CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement read on CNN. “The president, and especially the White House press secretary, should understand that their words matter. Thus far they have shown no comprehension of that.”
U.S. Democratic leaders in Congress said Trump’s call for unity rang “hollow” because of his past statements condoning acts of violence.
Last week, Trump, who has joined other Republicans in accusing Democrats of encouraging “mob” tactics, heaped praise on a Montana congressman who assaulted a reporter in 2017.
At an event in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, Brennan also faulted Trump for frequent inflammatory rhetoric, saying the president “too often has helped incite some of these feelings of anger, if not violence, when he points to acts of violence.”
“He should not be beating the tom-toms of anger and animosity and war,” said the former CIA chief, whose security clearance was revoked by Trump after he criticized the president’s summit earlier this year with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump at the Wisconsin rally called attention to “how nice I’m behaving tonight.”
“Have you ever seen this? We’re all behaving very well and hopefully we can keep it that way, right?”

Stonebwoy removes Sean Paul from 'Epistles of Mama' album

October 25, 2018 0
Stonebwoy removes Sean Paul from 'Epistles of Mama' album

Musician Stonebwoy and his management might be up to something and it seems arcane. There has been a change to Stonebwoy’s 2017 “Epistles of Mama” album on music store, iTunes.
According to the latest update on the album, it was released on June 27, 2018.
But the initial release date, which Pulse.com.gh published, was December 12, 2017.
Stonebwoy released the 24-track double album (afrobeats and reggae) last year in honour of his late mother Catherine Satekla who died on July 29, 2015.
The album, which features a tall list of artistes including Kabaka Pyramid, Sarkodie, Mugeez, Efya, AKA, Praiz and Burna Boy, debuted on the Billboard World Albums Chart in March 2018 and peaked at 13.

He also removed his banging song “Most Original” which features Grammy award-winning artiste Sean Paul from his album, leaving 23 tracks.
Why the changes?
The first reason could be a genuine mistake from his management because no sane artiste would change his/her album release date for fun.
Secondly, he might be targeting awards in 2019 with his albums because it has a lot of hits which are dominating charts this year.

But, this will not work. Because the album has already been nominated for awards. It was listed alongside Ebony Reigns “Bonified”, MzVee’s “Daavi” and Sarkodie’s “Highest” for the 2018 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. He lost to the late Ebony Reigns.
Aside from these two reasons, I cannot tell what the changes were all about.
Stonebwoy's 2018 edition of his annual concert "Ashaiman to the World" is scheduled for this Saturday, October 27. Top artistes billed to perform include Sarkodie, Edem, Kwaw Kese, Medikal, Darko Vibes and hiplife legend, Okomfour Kwadee.

Liberia President George Weah Declares Education is Free at Public Universities
                       GEORGE WEAH, PRESIDENT OF LIBERIA

President George Weah does keep his promises, doesn't he? The University of Liberia and all public universities in Liberia are now tuition free!
President of Liberia, President George Weah has sensationally declared that the University of Liberia and all other public universities in Liberia tuition free. Yes, you got that right: no cost at all for any student pursuing undergraduate education at public universities in the country.
Weah made the announcement during his visit to the University of Liberia and also took to his Facebook page to announce the joyful news to the world.
Speaking to the crowd, he also promised that he would make University education free in the country and make Liberia an example to other African nations on the continent.
During the last campaign before his election, George Weah said to a large congregation of his supporters, "I played football in Europe. I would have stayed in Europe and enjoyed my money, but I came to Liberia to redeem you from the bondage of hardships. See what I have done in this country in terms of development."
Today, will come down as one to be remembered in history as the president, in a few months after his election, has declared the prestigious University of Liberia and all other public Universities in Liberia tuition free.

In a message through his official Facebook handle, the president wrote:
"Today, I am excited to announce that I have declared the university of Liberia and all other public universities in Liberia Tuition free for all undergraduates."

This is indeed good news and one which will go down well with youth not only in Liberia but Africa in general.

Vice Chancellor must go-KNUST students insist

Vice Chancellor must go-KNUST students insist
A group calling itself Concerned Students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is intensifying calls for the dismissal or resignation of the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The group insists, Prof Kwasi Obiri Danso’s administration is appalling with students suffering under his autocratic leadership, a more reason why he must be relieved of his post.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Emmanuel Yiadom Boakye said “the concerned students have resolved that the failure of leadership from the university management is solely responsible for the unfortunate event of last Monday and calls for the V-C, Dean of students, head of security, university relations officer to be set aside for investigations and other relevant issues to continue.”

They believe the actions and inactions of these persons led to Monday’s protest and their continuous stay in office will not augur well for the university.

The group also wants an interim management body commissioned to take over the affairs of the university which has been indefinitely closed.

Although the group insists their action on Monday has nothing to do with the recent conversion of two single halls into mixed ones, they are demanding a reversal of the decision.

“The immediate cause of the demonstration on Monday was the brutalities meted on our students,” Boakye said.
KNUST closed down indefinitely

Instead of building a wall around the school, the group wants university authorities to invest that money into building new halls for female students.

“We believe firmly that the bricks, blocks, strength, energy and funds used in building these walls could have been channelled in raising a very firm foundation for our next hall that could have accommodated all the females that the VC would have wanted to admit,” he added.

But National President of the University Teacher’s Association (UTAG) who has already condemned calls for the VC to be removed maintains it is not the place of the students or any other person to demand his sack or resignation.

“We think it is a call that should be made by the University Council,” Dr Eric Opoku said, adding that the VC was only acting on the orders of the Council.

The best way, for him, is to allow the Council to examine the issue since that is how university’s work but the calls for sack or resignation will not happen.

“The students are behaving as if they are not complicit in the matter and presenting themselves constantly as victims,”

Manchester United 0 Juventus 1: Dybala downs Mourinho's men on Ronaldo's return Oct 23, 2018

Paulo Dybala scored the only goal as Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a winning return to Old Trafford with Juventus, beating Manchester United 1-0 in Group H of the Champions League.

Juve, who have won all but one of their games in all competitions this season, were utterly dominant as Jose Mourinho's men delivered another disappointing display on Tuesday.

Ronaldo was involved in Dybala's winner, sending in a right-wing cross that ran into the forward's path off a combination of Chris Smalling and Juan Cuadrado.

And although United improved after the interval - Paul Pogba hitting the post with a late curling shot - they were grateful to David de Gea for keeping the score down, the Spain goalkeeper making a world-class stop to keep out Ronaldo.

Dybala flashed an early header wide and former Juve star Pogba also wasted an aerial chance, nodding a free-kick from Ashley Young straight at Wojciech Szczesny.

But Juve struck in the 17th minute when Ronaldo's delivery from out wide deflected kindly for Argentina attacker Dybala to tuck away his fourth Champions League goal of the season.

De Gea denied Joao Cancelo before making a double save as Juve continued to press, blocking a viciously swerving Ronaldo free-kick and then saving from Blaise Matuidi on the rebound.

The United goalkeeper was busy again after the break, making a wonderful save high to his left to keep out Ronaldo's thunderous effort, while the hosts toiled at the other end.

Pogba almost snatched an undeserved point, his 75th-minute strike clipping the woodwork and bouncing clear off the diving Szczesny, but the Serie A champions held on to darken Mourinho's mood.

What it means: Problems mount for Mourinho

United have won once in their last seven matches and Mourinho - whose side arrived late for the second home Champions League game in a row - had to watch his side receive a footballing lesson at Old Trafford. Juve, meanwhile, look like serious contenders for the title after a supreme showing maintained their 100 per cent record in the group. There is work to do for United to qualify, but they should still edge out Valencia and Young Boys.

Chiellini in cruise control

Mourinho has regularly bemoaned his defensive options and he must wish he had a player of Giorgio Chiellini's class and poise. The Juve skipper did not put a foot wrong, even setting up an attack by selling Marcus Rashford an outrageous dummy. Chiellini's partner Leonardo Bonucci - who revealed on the eve of the game he had turned down a move to United - also excelled, producing one terrific tackle to deny Anthony Martial.

Pogba lacks influence

France midfielder Pogba was looking forward to an emotional reunion with Juve but he struggled to exert his influence on the contest. He was outshone by a relative rookie as Rodrigo Bentancur helped the away side dominate the midfield battle for Juve, although Pogba did come close to equalising for United.

What's next?

A return to domestic duties for both sides at the weekend, with Juve heading to Empoli on Saturday and United hosting Everton in the Premier League 24 hours later.

Poorer couples could save their relationship by giving each other the silent treatment – Study

Poorer couples could save their relationship by giving each other the silent treatment – Study

New research has found that giving your partner the silent treatment could actually keep your relationship going. Yes, simply ignoring them instead of arguing could extend your time together.
Who knew. Also known as the ‘cold shoulder’, the silent treatment has previously been linked to less intimacy and poorer health.

But now, the first study of its kind has found that it can actually work – but only depending on how much you earn. Ignoring a spouse’s demands is likely to be the best policy for those on a lower-income.
But the controversial tactic backfires among those on higher salaries, say psychologists . Lead author Jaclyn Ross, of California University in Los Angeles, explained: ‘Consider this example:
‘A wife requests her husband ask for a raise at work. For a husband in a low-wage job with less job security, that is a risky proposition.
‘By showing reluctance to ask for the raise, he can preserve his self-esteem and lessen emphasis on the couple’s vulnerable financial situation.
‘For a wealthier couple in the same situation, the wife may perceive the husband is unwilling to make a sacrifice for his family and that can cause friction in the relationship.’ Dubbed ‘demand-withdraw’ behaviour, it has been documented by clinicians since the 1930s – but only recently researched.
It’s been found to be one of the most frequently used responses to conflict in romances – and a major cause of divorce.
But the US team say the classic ‘relationship stalemate’ when a partner shuts down at being asked to do something is much more complicated than previously believed.
Graduate student Ms Ross and colleagues said previous studies on the phenomenon have focused almost exclusively on white middle class couples.
They came up with conflicting results suggesting the common behaviour could be harmful – or helpful.
So the latest published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology included more racially and ethnically diverse participants – and analysed their socioeconomic status.
It found giving the silent treatment helped relationships stay stable for couples with less financial resources – and decline for those who were more affluent.
Interestingly, relationship satisfaction dropped for lower-income couples when the picked on spouse did not ‘exhibit strong withdrawal behaviours’.
Co-author Professor Thomas Bradbury said: ‘Even though it’s easier for wealthier couples to access resources to address their relationship problems, it can also create higher expectations that partners will make accommodations for one another’s demands and needs that underlie their problems.
‘But if those expectations are not met, rifts can occur in the relationship and exacerbate the existing problems.’ As in earlier studies it focused on the wife giving the demand – and the husband being the one to withdraw.
Examples of the behaviour included the wives being hostile, dominating, threatening or blaming – while their husbands avoided the confrontation.
To get these findings, the researchers conducted two experiments. The first followed 515 couples with at least one child or one on the way for 18 months, four-in-ten of which were below the poverty line.
They were visited in their homes and asked to engage in a series of discussions about something each partner wanted to change about themselves – as well as a topic of disagreement.
The second recruited 414 newlywed couples who were asked to do the same. They were seen four times over 27 months.
Again the disadvantaged volunteers experienced more dissatisfaction when the husbands displayed lower withdrawal in the face of the wives’ demands.
But it was not as robust this time – possibly because they had only just got hitched whereas the others had been married for an average of five years.
She said the study highlights the importance of using diverse samples in research on couples because results can vary based on differing life circumstances.
The results could benefit counsellors who work with couples in therapy and policymakers focused on marriage and family. Jaclyn said:
‘Life circumstances may matter for relationships far more than we think – so much so that these circumstances appear to moderate the effects of communication on how happy we are in our partnerships.
‘Creating safe and secure environments helps to allow partners to relate well to each other and to their children, giving more people the kinds of relationships and families that will keep them healthy and happy.’
Of course, giving the silent treatment to sort out your differences shouldn’t be your first port of call. And, previous research has suggested that people who resort to it are more prone to anxiety and aggression, with it being the most common pattern of conflict in marriage or in any committed, established romantic relationship.
This could also lead to psychological issues that ultimately develop into physical ones such as urinary, bowel and erectile dysfunction.
Psychologists call it the demand-withdraw pattern which happens when one partner makes constant requests of the other and is met with frequent repudiation.
Typically, the way the refusing partner expresses their denial is by ignoring their partner – which is of course what is known as the silent treatment. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female – as another study based on more than 14,000 people found the damage remained the same.
However, it was found that women are more likely than men to be the demanders when it comes to the silent treatment.

Man faces jail time for calling police 45,000 times in one year

A 55-year-old Turkish man is facing up to five years in jail for “preventing public officials from performing their duty”. His crime – phoning the police 45,210 times in just one year.
Şeref Can, a divorced man from Istanbul’s Bayrampaşa district, allegedly called the police line well over 100 times per day between May 15, 2017 and May 15, 2018, but never once made any sort of complaint or asked police assistance.
Instead, he only tried to make conversation with whoever picked up the phone. At one point, police staff became so irritated by Can’s unusual habit that they filed a complaint about him with Istanbul Police’s communications and electronics department.
After confirming that Can had called the 115 emergency number a total of 45,210 times in a year, investigators charged him with “obstructing service of public institutions”.
The offender is set to stand trial at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance, and, if found guilty of the charges brought against him, faces a jail term of up to five years.
Can has already apologized to the police in a statement, saying that he only called them incessantly because he was lonely, but it remains to be seen if the judge will consider his apology.
“I divorced my wife about two years ago. I was consuming alcohol all the time. I called the emergency line because I was feeling depressed and lonely. I regret my actions and won’t do it again,” Şeref Can reportedly
wrote in his statement.

Vote for Free Tertiary Education over Mahama's 1 party school, 1 constituency - Abronye DC

October 23, 2018 0
Vote for Free Tertiary Education over Mahama's 1 party school, 1 constituency - Abronye DC
Abronye DC, Brong Ahafo Regional First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party

Maverick Brong Ahafo Regional First Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe popularly known as Abronye DC has urged Ghanaians to vote for NPP in 2020 to introduce Free Tertiary Education and ignore One Party School for One Constituency message which is being promised by the former President, Mr. John Mahama.
Addressing delegates in the Sene West Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region on Friday, October 19, 2018, former President John Mahama who is aspiring to lead the NDC in 2020 general elections, has promised to establish a party school for each constituency across the country to equip his party members.
Mr. Mahama said the school will help the party to know its members through a database collection and revealed that he can only fulfil this promise when elected as the president of this country.
President John Mahama further told the people that he was more experienced than President Akufo-Addo so when given the opportunity for the second time, he would change the country.
He urged his party members to be united and whistle political power from the NPP government and save Ghanaians from the NPP's economic hardship.
But in a statement signed by NPP's controversial communicator and copied to GhanaWeb indicated that former President Mahama failed to fulfil the NDC's 2012 campaign promises and therefore called on Ghanaians to ignore his recent promises.
The statement emphasized, "I will like to first and foremost draw the attention of all and sundry to some promises captured in the NDC manifesto made prior to the 2012 elections".
The statement added "Ghanaians voted for John Mahama based on those promises yet he failed to execute even one; John Mahama promised 10% oil revenue for Western Regional Chiefs, He promised Fertilizer industries to give impetus to agro development. See also page 11 of their 2012 manifesto, He promised to build an Eastern Regional hospital. See page 34 of manifesto".
According to Abronye DC, former President Mahama is planning to use the ordinary Ghanaian tax payer's money to feed his party members if elected as a President of this country and that he is only becoming president to loot the state funds.
"From the tape, it could be depicted that John Mahama is planning to use the ordinary Ghanaian tax payer's money to feed his party faithfuls. It is clear that, the intent of John Mahama's come back is to loot state funds for his party", he alleged.

The statement emphasized "While the Nana Addo NPP government is initiating policies such as NaBCo, Free SHS, etc we have people from NDC condemning same. The National Organizer for the NDC Kofi said NaBCo which will benefit the entire unemployed youth is a waste of resources".
The statement stated "Sometimes, I wonder whether the NDC really thinks about Ghanaians. Anything that will benefit the entire citizenry, they will be the first to criticize but now, here are the same people promising to establish political party schools in each Constituency".
Abronye DC added that the NPP government has so far performed extremely well and was optimistic that Ghanaians will vote for his party to enjoy Free Tertiary Education.
The statement asked 'My simple question to all Ghanaian is that, will they prefer an NDC ideological school over Free SHS, NaBCo, 1D 1F, 1 village 1 Dam, etc".
"The NDC institute of Ideological Studies will be of no benefit to the ordinary Ghanaian yet the NDC feel that one is prudent than NaBCo and Free SHS", he rubbished the NDC's party school.
The statement emphasized that Ghanaians in 2020 general elections, would be voting for Free Tertiary Education over Mr. Mahama's one party school for each constituency.
"The Good people of Ghana will rather prefer Free Tertiary Education over that bogus and useless NDC school", the statement stressed.

Below is the full statement
RE: ONE CONSTITUENCY ONE NDC PARTY SCHOOL IN 2021 - SAYS JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA

While the NPP is planning on how to implement a free Tertiary Education program in 2021, the flagbearer aspirant for the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama who is on a tour in the Brong Ahafo Region is heard on tape promising to facilitate the establishment of an NDC school dubbed Institute of Ideological Studies in each Constituency for the party faithfuls when he is elected as flagbearer and subsequently wins the 2020 general elections. He made those promises whilst addressing delegates at the Sene West Constituency.

I will like to first and foremost draw the attention of all and sundry to some promises captured in the NDC manifesto made prior to the 2012 elections.
Ghanaians voted for John Mahama based on those promises yet he failed to execute even one;
1. John Mahama promised 10% oil revenue for Western Regional Chiefs
2. He promised salt based chemical industries of Caustic Soda. See page 11 of 2012 manifesto
3. He promised Fertilizer industries to give impetus to agro development. See also page 11 of their 2012 manifesto
4. He promised in page 11 of their manifesto to establish textile industries and ventures in their value chain.
5. He promised to build an Eastern Regional hospital. See page 34 of manifesto
6. He also promised to complete the WA Regional hospital. see page 34
7. He promised to establish manufacturing enterprises to process agriculture produce especially beans, fruits and Shea nuts. See page 63 of manifesto
8. He further promised to establish integrated Shea butter processing factories in the Northern Region. See also page 63.

Just to mention a few. These are promises which induced the ordinary Ghanaian to vote for John Mahama however, he completely failed to fulfil any of these promises.
From the tape, it could be depicted that John Mahama is planning to use the ordinary Ghanaian tax payer's money to feed his party faithfuls. It is clear that, the intent of John Mahama's come back is to loot state funds for his party.
While the Nana Addo NPP government is Initiating policies such as NaBCo, Free SHS, etc be we have people from NDC condemning same.
The National Organizer for the NDC Kofi said NaBCo which will benefit the entire unemployed youth is a waste of resources.
Also, whilst the Nana Addo administration is trying so hard to reduce electricity tariffs and other tariffs including;
I. 17.5% VAT on domestic airlines
ii. 5% VAT on real estate
iii. Excise duty on petroleum
Iv. 7.5% on selected imported medicine, etc....
We have persons like the former president Mahama and his finance minister Seth Tepker telling Ghanaians that, reduction of tariffs is a populist approach and that, same is a recipe for disaster.

Sometimes, I wonder whether the NDC really thinks about Ghanaians. Anything that will benefit the entire citizenry, they will be the first to criticize but now, here are the same people promising to establish political party schools in each Constituency.
My simple question to all Ghanaians is that, will they prefer An NDC ideological school over Free SHS, NaBCo, 1D 1F, 1 village 1 Dam, etc.
The NDC institute of Ideological Studies will be of no benefit to the ordinary Ghanaian yet the NDC feel that one is prudent than NaBCo and Free SHS
The Good people of Ghana will rather prefer Free Tertiary Education over that bogus and useless NDC school.
Signed!
